The government of Pakistan has taken a significant step in addressing the rising issue of cyber crimes by forming the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). This new agency replaces the Cyber Crime Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) which has been dissolved.
The formation of the NCCIA comes as a response to the growing challenges posed by cyber crimes in the country.
Under the provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crime Act, 2016, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication has officially established the NCCIA to lead the investigation and prosecution of electronic crimes.
Key highlights of the establishment include:
- The NCCIA will be led by a Director General, appointed by the federal government for a term of two years. The appointed individual must possess a minimum of 15 years of experience in relevant fields such as computer science, digital forensics, law, or information technology.
- The agency will be empowered to handle all matters related to cyber crime investigation, with a focus on enforcing the Prevention of Electronic Crime Act, 2016.
- All personnel, assets, liabilities, and ongoing investigations from the dissolved FIA Cyber Crime Wing will be transferred to the NCCIA.
- The NCCIA will have its own structure, including additional director generals, directors, and other necessary positions.
- Existing staff from the FIA Cyber Crime Wing will continue their duties for a transitional period of one year until new staff is appointed to the NCCIA.
The establishment of the NCCIA underlines the government’s commitment to effectively tackle cybercrime. With dedicated resources and specialized expertise, the agency is poised to play a critical role in ensuring cyber security and protecting citizens from digital threats.
