In a recent press conference, Pakistan’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Atta Tarar, clarified that the country’s current internet disruptions are not related to government interference but rather to global internet issues. He emphasized that, similar to other nations, Pakistan is experiencing internet connectivity problems, which are beyond governmental control.
Atta Tarar explained that if there are any issues related to firewalls, they pertain to data and cybersecurity rather than government censorship.
The minister pointed out that disruptions in internet service, including those affecting flight operations in the U.S., are part of a broader, worldwide problem. The government has no direct role in these disruptions.
He also mentioned that matters related to security and cybersecurity would be further addressed by the IT Ministry and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). According to Tarar, any firewall systems in place are intended for safeguarding data and maintaining cybersecurity, and they do not interfere with freedom of speech.
